    Concept paper on a curriculum initiative for energy, climate change, and sustainability at Boston University

    [Summary] Boston University has made important contributions to the interconnected challenges of energy, climate change, and sustainability (ECS) through its research, teaching, and campus operations. This work reveals new opportunities to expand the scope of teaching and research and place the University at the forefront of ECS in higher education. This paper describes the framework for a University-wide curriculum initiative that moves us in that direction and that complements the University’s strategic plan. The central curricular objectives are to provide every undergraduate the opportunity be touched in some way in their educational program by exposure to some aspect of the ECS challenge, and to increase opportunities for every graduate student to achieve a focused competence in ECS. The initiative has six cornerstone initiatives. The first is the Campus as a Living Lab (CALL) program in which students, faculty and staff work together and use our urban campus and its community to study and implement ECS solutions. The second is a university-wide minor degree that helps students develop an integrated perspective of the economic, environmental, and social dimensions of sustainability. The third is one or more graduate certificate programs open to all graduate students. The fourth is an annual summer faculty workshop that develops new ECS curriculum and CALL opportunities. The fifth is web-based resource that underpins the construction of a vibrant knowledge network for the BU community and beyond. Finally, an enhanced sustainability alumni network will augment professional opportunities and generate other benefits. The learning outcomes of this initiative will be realized through the collaborative work of faculty, students, and staff from all 17 colleges and schools. The initiative will leverage existing BU student resources such as the Thurman Center, Build Lab, and Innovate@BU. Benefits of this initiative, beyond the curriculum, include acceleration towards the goals of our Climate Action Plan; improving the “sustainability brand” of BU; enhancing the ability to attract students and new faculty; strengthening our alumni and campus communities; deepening our ties with the city of Boston; and the potential to spin off new social and technological innovations.Published versio

    OR05-3 Mir-21 Contributes to Cytokine-Induced Beta Cell Dysfunction via Inhibition of mRNAs Regulating Beta Cell Identity

    A hallmark of diabetes is the loss of physical or functional β cell mass. Alterations in β cell microRNA (miRNA) profiles have been described in diabetes. MiRNAs have also been shown to serve as important regulators of β cell development and function, implicating them in β cell dysfunction during diabetes development. Our lab has previously demonstrated that β cell microRNA 21 (miR-21) is increased in models of diabetes. However, a comprehensive analysis of the β cell effects of miR-21 remain poorly defined, and the effects of miR-21 on in vivo glucose homeostasis have never been explored. To this end, we performed a comprehensive in silico analysis of bioinformatics databases to identify potential β cell targets of miR-21, which yielded multiple targets in the Transforming Growth Factor Beta 2 (Tgfb2) and Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 3 (Fgfr3) pathways associated with regulation of differentiation. We hypothesize that β cell miR-21 plays a critical role in inhibiting β cell function and inducing loss of β cell identity. To validate targets in vitro, we developed a model whereby miR-21 is upregulated using a dose dependent lentiviral Tetracycline-on system in INS1 cells. Overexpression of miR-21 led to a reduction in expression levels of several members of the Tgfb2 and Fgfr3 pathways as well as multiple transcription factors associated with β cell function and identity, and an increase in aldehyde dehydrogenase transcripts, consistent with β cell dedifferentiation. To verify direct interactions between miR-21 and candidate target mRNAs, a biotin pulldown experiment was performed using a 3’ biotinylated mature miR-21 construct and a 3’ biotinylated cel-miR-67 control construct. Several mRNAs associated with β cell identity were enriched in the pulldown, indicating a direct interaction with miR-21. Lineage tracing was performed within an in vivo zebrafish model of β cell specific oxidative stress in which β cells expressed a nuclear GFP signal. Whole body knock down of miR-21 by morpholino microinjection showed a protective effect in stressed β cells and rescued against a dedifferentiated phenotype. To test the effect of miR-21 on glucose tolerance in vivo, inducible β cell specific knockout (βmiR-21KO) and overexpression (βmiR-21) mice were generated by crossing Ins1tm1(CreERT2)Thor mice with miR-21 floxed mice and miR-21-CAG-Z-EGFP mice, respectively. When compared to littermate controls, intraperitoneal glucose tolerance tests (IPGTT) exhibited hyperglycemia in βmiR-21 mice and euglycemia in βmiR-21KO mice. Metabolic studies, including glucose stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS) and insulin tolerance tests (ITT) are ongoing in our mouse models. Our results implicate miR-21 as a regulator of β cell dedifferentiation during diabetes development

    The Importance of the Relationship Between Domestic Violence Victims and Their Pets

    The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between domestic violence and animal abuse with the goal of adding to the literature in this area. This study collected data from domestic violence and homeless shelters across the United States by sending a questionnaire via email. Two themes emerged based on the questionnaire responses, first, shelters reported that victims disclosed their fear of leaving an abusive situation due to abuse or threat of abuse to a family pet. And second, shelters indicated that they are unable to accommodate pets due to either, health and safety reasons, or financial difficulties. It may be that women are not seeking shelter due to the lack of a pet accommodation, and as a result are more likely to be the victim of a violent situation at the hands of their abuser. Considering the themes that emerged from the responses collected during this study, there is not only a need for pet accommodation within shelters, but also logistical and financial support for the shelters that cannot make these accommodations

    This research is based on a single case study of psychoanalytic therapy with a young adolescent boy in care. It is part of a growing movement to identify research methods for exploring the place of unconscious expectations, emotion and affect, in relationships. It experiments with methods for testing out psychoanalytic theory and contributing findings to evidence, modify or expand theory in new directions. The patient Simon, had a history of deprivation and showed many features of ADHD and oppositional conduct disorder. The research locates him in a “family” of children who share histories of early traumas and serious behavioural difficulties. Therefore findings, while grounded in clinical material from a single case, and restricted in scope, are of relevance to work with a very needy and challenging population of children, who are often a major cause of concern to their carers, teachers, social workers and to mentalhealth professionals. The research examines clinical material through the framework of Bion’s theoretical claim that identifies thinking as at bottom an emotional process, and relates symbolic capacity to early emotional experiences of communication and containment. The framework was selected because of its relevance to the particular features of the patient, which emerged through the detailed study of session records. The analysis of patient therapist interaction follows Bion in looking at thinking and learning, side by side with the sort of internal objects active in the therapeutic relationship, and the emotions connected to them. Through a detailed focus on these aspects of clinical material, the author assesses some current ideas about what interferes with a deprived child’s capacity to think and learn from experience; and what are the factors in a therapeutic relationship that can help a child’s capacity in these areas to grow

In states with such mandates, 26.3 percent of districts didn't have local policies.
